LAPTOPS VS DESKTOPS : PROS AND CONS
LAPTOPS VS DESKTOPS
When buying a computer you will be faced with two options,
either you could go with a laptop or a desktop. Both a laptop or a desktop have
vast opportunities and have some cons as well so it is very important to know
all about them. Well that’s what this article is all about, telling you all about
the great fight of Desktops vs Laptops. This article is going to cover almost
all the aspects so read till the end.
[Note – when we say desktop we refer to self built desktops
and not prebuilt computers]
First of all if you expect to read a text that says which
one of them is superior then let me tell you there is no such thing. Both of
them have their advantages and what may be useless for one person might be the treasure to another one,
and if someone tells you that one is superior to the other then he’s wrong. This
article briefly compare laptops vs desktops I n various important aspects of
day to day life so that you can find out what will be the best option for you.
Now lets get started with the comparison, following are the
main points of difference when it comes to laptops vs desktops
POWER CONSUMPTION
Power consumption is a very important aspect of comparison,
why? Well you gotta pay the electricity
bills right? And if you use your pc most of the day then it is gonna affect
you. Most importantly for people who have just started a business or are trying
earning online from home and are in the starting phase, what is the use of a pc
if it costs more to run it for a day than it earns for you.
The bigger screen of desktops and the extra peripherals
attached and the increasing craze of RGB and other hard core gaming stuff lead
to the extensively increased performance of the desktops. There could also be a
system that consumes very less power like a system that has 300 watt PSU but
then it is very limited in processing power and internal specifications.
Overall laptops consume less power than desktops. The smaller
parts of laptops lead to the less power consumption.
DESK SPACE
Well you might be thinking that how is this even a criteria
for comparison it dosen’t even matter, but the fact is that it does. Especially
for the people who live in small rented homes or hostels or even as paying
guests.
For students it can save a lot of valuable space as the
hostel rooms are already quite congested. And if brought to deep thought you
need to have a full table and a chair to use your desktop whereas there is no
such requirement for a laptop. Which frees up the table and now it can be used
for other important work such as a study table.
MOBILITY
There is not much discussion required for this one as the mobility
for PC’s is practically nil whereas laptops can be taken anywhere and whenever
needed, if chosen with a bit care some laptops are so mobile that you could
carry them with you without even having any trouble at all.
Though this does not mean that all laptops are very easy to
carry around some of the laptops which are specifically built for gaming and
are very high end may be so heavy and they may even have so bad battery life
that they may become “not so mobile”, therefore it is very necessary to know
what you are buying.
VALUE FOR MONEY
When it comes to draining the most performance for the buck
then desktop computers outperform laptops. Due to the need to make the
components smaller and more power efficient the companies end up spending more
on them making them expensive.
Also the limited power options of laptops limit the
performance of their components. Whereas desktop components are cheaper and you
can always drain a bit more performance by overclocking due to the extra headroom
present for cooling in desktops.
The conclusion that can be derived from this is that when it
comes to value for money desktops lead the way.
PERFORMANCE
Performance of desktop computers are higher than that of
laptops. For example a full fledged desktop i3 processor will be about 30
percent faster than the mobile(laptop) version of the same i3 processor, and
that is a huge difference considering the performance of components further
drops when the machine gets heated and thermal throttles.
Overall if the performance of two machines ie. A laptop and
a desktop with a same budget is to be compared then the desktop computer is
surely going to win, considering that the pc was built by a experienced person
or the components were chosen keeping in mind only one thing that is to build
the most bang for the buck desktop computer.
UPGRADABILITY
Here again desktops take the lead by a notch, upgradability
is very important for future proofing a computer as with time your requirements
and the performance you demand from the computer system may increase but the
upgradability options in laptops are very poor.
Only the ram and storage of laptops are upgradable, the
processor might also be upgradable in some laptops but these cases are very
rare, and even if it is possible to upgrade then also you need to stick with
the same generation processors as the motherboard can not be changed.
Also the
IO options on laptops are very poor. Some laptops like macbooks only come with
a couple of thunderbolt ports, even if they support huge variety of operation
then also a dongle needs to be always carried in order to use a new
connectivity option.
So now I think that you might have understood the difference
between laptops vs desktops. Not that you have read this the final advice from my side would be that font get too excited about the good features and just choose anything from the shelf take your time think about what you really need in your day to day life and what is practical can then go for it.
